Merry Christmas

I hope each one of you has a Merry Christmas!

For Christians, this is the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. And for everyone else, this is a time for good will among people.

Let us take a little time to help one another during this holiday. A friendly smile, a helping hand, a phone call or a simple note or card just to say you care. It’s not much to you, but to someone else it may be a very big thing. Especially if that person is alone this year or missing a loved one.

And you might just be surprised at the gift you receive in return. That feeling of making someone’s day brighter, or their load a little lighter, can be the best gift of all.

Happy Veterans Day

Happy Veterans Day to all the veterans out there.

There are still many people in this country (United States) and other countries around the world who appreciate the sacrifices you’ve made.

And a special thanks to the families of all the veterans out there. We realize the sacrifices you’ve made also.

The United States would not be a free nation today without the sacrifices of the men and women in our armed forces. The same is true of other nations and other groups of people.

Sometimes people forget that they wouldn’t enjoy the freedoms, or financial and educational opportunities, they have, if it weren’t for the sacrifices made by the people of our armed forces.

Stop and think about that the next time someone writes, or speaks, about the type of people who join, or are in, the armed forces. Make sure you correct them and let them know these men and women are the most noble in our country. (It’s the very least you can do for them after they’ve done so much for you.)

Is The View viable?

When Rosie O’Donnell was host of the television talk show, The View, the only thing keeping it in the ratings was the feud with Donald Trump. There were also the spats Rosie had with Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the show’s only conservative co-host. And before Rosie even took over as host, there was the controversy between Rosie and another co-host, Star Jones. Star Jones also had a dispute with Joy Behar, one of the show’s original co-hosts.

Donald Trump had made the statement that the only reason The Views ratings were so high was because of the feud between himself and Rosie. That seemed to be the case. Unfortunately, it also might have ruined a friendship between Barabara Walters, a co-host on the show and the show’s executive co-producer, and Donald Trump. Rosie’s political theories probably only made sense to fellow co-host, Joy Behar. To others Rosie was just too far left. Continue reading →

The Harry Potter Influence

There has been a lot of talk in the past about the influence of Harry Potter books on our young people. There was talk of witchcraft versus religion, good versus evil and a number of other things. Valid points, to be sure, but I started looking at it from a different perspective.

With all the video games, television shows, computers and other distractions out there, one of the things that might be in danger is just reading for pleasure. My granddaughter for example typically reads an 800+ page Harry Potter book in two days. Her concentration is so intense that outside influences just don’t distract her.

I believe this is a good thing. It encourages a skill (reading) that will be needed throughout her education and even later in life. At one point in history reading was the favorite recreation of many people. Even now I believe that Hollywood is still no match for one’s imagination. And even though most books are replete with details, those details are still filtered and interpreted by each reader’s imagination.Reading is an important skill to learn and should be learned as early as possible in life. Parents should encourage their children to take time to read. I think with the Harry Potter books it was not the reading that bothered some parents, but what was being read. Continue reading →

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

This is a familiar proverb to many people and was used by Robert Frost in his poem, Mending Wall. It has a special meaning these days in regards to illegal immigration. But I’d like to look at it from a different perspective.

Fences have typically been used to keep some people, or animals out, and some people, or animals in. They have been used to mark a person’s property, i.e. to establish boundaries.

The deeper meaning here is about respecting boundaries. Certainly we don’t expect animals to honor boundaries, but we do expect humans to do so. But today there seem to be no boundaries. People are crossing boundaries in all areas of our lives, including our private space, or property. Continue reading →

Decline in Education

It seems that education has declined in most of the big U.S. cities. This is a trend which has happened over many years. Now there is more emphasis on security than learning. Not that teachers and faculty should be without protection, but if the atmosphere was geared more to learning, it would seem that such security would not be necessary. Continue reading →

When Is Technology Destructive?

In general, technology is a good thing. Advances in medicine, space exploration, computers, software, etc. help us to live better lives. But, do we ever stop to think about the negative aspect of technology?

For example, wireless communication and cell phones in particular have been good for most of us. Instead of being stranded on some deserted road, we can call for help. (Provided the battery in the cell phone is charged.) But for others, and their families, cell phones have been a tragedy. People distracted by talking on cell phones have caused many accidents which resulted in the death or injury of many people. Continue reading →
